To work out how many steps to transpose, find the original key on this list and find the key you require. Don't count the start note but count all notes upto and including the note for the key you require. Counting from left to right is transposing up and right to left is transposing down.
For example, transposing from G to C can be achieved in 2 ways, transposing up 5 semitones or transposing down 7 semitones.
