- Do you use cookies?

Yes. The information stored is: username, password and number of days to view. You can still post to folkinfo using your username without a cookie but the operation is more cumbersome and certain user preferences can not operate. To access folkinfo using your username without having a cookie stored on your computer, it is necessary to enter your username and password every time you want to post, read personal messages, or anything else that would require authentication.

- Can I view the details of other members?

Yes. Members can view the optional information supplied by other members. This information can be viewed either by clicking on a username within a topic (thread) or can be accessed via the personal page.

- What is the policy of holding member details?

Member profile information is used by folkinfo and its Admins purely for administration purposes, and no information is given to 3rd parties. Optional information which can be viewed by all members is based on trust between members here. Don't enter information on your personal page which you will not be comfortable with everyone seeing.

- I've forgotten my password, what can I do?

This page will allow you to submit the email address you used to register with folkinfo, and an email will be sent to you with your password.

The Discussion Forum

- How do I create a new topic?

Click on 'Create New Topic/List Forums' on the main forum page. This will list all the forums. Choose the appropriate forum and click 'New Topic'.

- How do I use the 'Skip' function?

The skip function is available by clicking on the 'Create New Topic/List Forums' link. If there is a particular topic that does not interest you, click the 'Skip' box next to that topic. Click the 'Update Preferences' button. This will take you back to the main forum page. Threads on that subject will not show up on your thread list. If you change your mind and want to read a threads you have been skipping, go back to the List Forums view, uncheck the box, and update your preferences.

- How do I edit a post?

You can edit a post you have made by clicking on the edit link above the post. In all cases the post is stamped with the date and time of the edit.

Your Personal Page

- How do I send a personal message?

From the thread is the easiest - just click on "pm" under the user's name on the left. If you choose the "new message" option on your personal page, you will be asked to provide the name of a recipient from the list. Do that and click on continue. You can add more recipients using the list at the bottom of the page BEFORE completing the message and sending it.

- How do I know if I have a message?

If you are logged on and have messages, you should see "you have xxx active messages" on the list above the topic listings. If you are not logged on, messages need to be checked by viewing the personal page.

- What happens if I archive/delete a message?

Archived messages show up on the list of messages in the personal page. The system holds one copy of the message body which is viewed by the sender and the recipient(s). When a user "deletes" a personal message, they are notifying the system that they have no further interest in keeping it. When the last of the parties concerned flags a deletion, the message itself is removed from the system.

Note: Please try not to hold onto PMs longer than really needed for reasons of conserving disk space.

- How do I search for songs?

Go to the song database page. Enter the key words or phrase you are looking for, change the selection to 'phrase' if needed, and click search. You can also search by song category.

If you have a song you'd like added to the database, please post it to the folk songs forum.
